As our nation prepares for the May 2024 Republican primary election, the democratic spirit is alive in Monongalia County.
West Virginia's Secretary of State and county clerks are diligently working to enlist the support of thousands of poll workers, crucial individuals who form the frontline of our democratic process. In Monongalia County, Republicans are encouraged to be poll workers, and the Monongalia County GOP held a community event to bring potential poll workers, candidates, and committee members together.
The Significance of Poll Workers
Poll workers are the unsung heroes of our elections, ensuring the smooth and secure functioning of polling locations. Regardless of political affiliation, these citizens play a pivotal role in upholding the democratic values we hold dear. According to the WV Secretary of State, in 2024, more than 1,680 polling locations will be strategically staffed on both Primary and General Election Days, as well as during early voting across West Virginia. Poll workers enable voters to cast their ballots with the privacy and security mandated by law and protect the integrity of the election by ensuring only eligible voters cast ballots.
For those considering joining the ranks of poll workers, compensation is provided based on specific roles, and training, a crucial aspect of the process, and comes with a stipend. To be eligible, you must be a registered voter in your county, proficient in English, and able to commit to working the entire Election Day.
Monongalia County's Call to Action
In Monongalia County, the local Republican Executive Committee platform and pledge supports free and fair elections in accordance with the constitution of the United States of America and the laws and constitution of the State of West Virginia, and recognizes the need for dozens of Republican poll workers to support early voting and Election Day operations. To encourage citizens to step up and serve in this vital capacity, a free community event for Republicans - Red, White, & You - was held on January 27, 2024.
This mixer served as an informational session and open house where attendees learned about serving as a poll worker.
